Chapter Seventeen: Warned

AS JULY FADED INTO August, Tarja visited the library whenever she had free time. Either Kira or Floor joined her when they could, except each had their separate endeavors to look forward to.

Floor, a natural athlete, earned a spot on Henget’s thrashball team after she excelled in pickup games at the fields near the campus’ rec center. Braden admitted to Tarja he saw the girl in action and invited Henget Captain Lance Stone over to watch her play.

Stone wasn’t interested in freshmen, Braden told Tarja via text, but admitted she outplayed his best roamers, a position that roamed the entire field, if Tarja understood it right. And after a strong showing in early-August’s Purple and White Game, Floor found herself busy training five days a week after class for the season opener in the second weekend of September.

The stunt Stacey and her Intrepid crew pulled emotionally strengthened Kira. She and others with ties to the Intrepid were beyond shocked to see her brewing confidence and new ability to ward off their latest verbal attacks and occasional “incidental” shove.

Just as Benight news networks or anyone with power, money, and influence love blowing things out of proportion to drive a specific narrative, Stacey and them would make one think the entire school wanted to get rid of Kira.

But it became clear Kira had more forgiving support on this campus than any of them initially thought. Mostly from the Benight-Born crowd that either knew nothing of her, or shrugged off those looking to harm her reputation. Kira even gained the attention of a few Benight-Born guys. But she insisted on staying single.

“I’m here for school, not love,” she said. “Well...”

Tarja narrowed her eyes when they sat in the library. “Who do you got your eye on?”

“I’m one of those weird girls who’d rather be with an older guy. It’s just...I don’t know. Every time I Push into a guy’s vibes, I get nothing but raging hormones and unfulfilled needs. It’s just not who I am.”
